Selfportrait

Fred Bastide

I was born in 1970 in Montreux, Switzerland. I’m a freelance artist, principally working with discreet’s 3ds max. I’ve studied arts at Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Geneva, and Ecole Supérieure des arts appliqués in Vevey, both in Switzerland. Trained as sculptor, I also learned anatomy and have worked with design, theatre, cinema and publicity. I’ve discovered CGI in 1997 with 3ds dos, and was autodidact with 3d. I work with 3ds max, photoshop and am currently learning Rhino and Maya.

Diable 1992

© Fred Bastide

A Full scale Devil figure, about 240 cm, made for a “Monsters” exhibition. The head and hands was sculpted in plastiline. After casting, the original was made of polyurethane foam, latex and resin polyester. This is one of my biggest piece than I had ever made. The corpus was roughly sculpted out of an assembly of big polystyrene blocks, sculpted with an electric saw (not visible on these pictures), and covered with a large dress.

I’m very interested in the representation of Devil figure.

All images (except: diable_3, diable and devil_head_22) are related to "Zoodysée" an sci-fi exhibition held by the "House of Elsewhere". (1995-1996) The concept was a "cousteau" like expedition, in far away worlds. For this, I’ve designed and built some alien species, and designed the exploration vehicles and robots (featured in "machines"). In the story, Droids were used for exploring hostile environments, too dangerous for human scientists. For those concept designs, I’ve used Pantone pens technique.

Reptiles

A longtime personal project, about a reptile civilisation. The project, too ambitious, slept from 1996.

Another challenge, about aliens visits. This one brings me a 3ds max 6 license (1st prize). Made with 3ds max 5.0. and photoshop. Depth of field added with Defocus Dei. For this one, I experimented for the first time with the plastiline model as a guide for 3d model, and fell very enthusiastic about this method. Since, I've used this technique for every new model.

Micheline Calmy Rey and Pascal Couchepin

Two swiss politic figure, made with 3ds max and photoshop. For those too, I made a clay reference model, but bigger than usual. I have more caricature projects, and will try to make the new characters more hideous.
