On a formal level, the works comprise a synthesis of colour and line to describe volume and structure. The human figure; painted from life, is the predominant subject; not the idealised, commercialised model of contemporary celebrity-driven culture, but the everyday body with its myriad imperfections. The isolated figure, vulnerable and self-absorbed, is observed as a scape in which particular details are carefully depicted; the asymmetry of a pair of ears, the pull of flesh between finger and thumb, the sideways fall of a breast under its own particular weight. For the past two years I have been developing a project with a working title of “Pageant”; an environment of sideshow acts peopled by tumblers, magicians, strongmen and their assistants. This is not a series depicting the polish of a finalised performance; it dwells at the rehearsal stage; their work in progress. The figures are not yet in their costumes or completed body paint, the backdrops have not been pulled taut, practice sessions take place in backstage corners or woodland clearings. The underlying aim is to depict apparently ordinary people performing extraordinary acts, some of which may be displays of genuine talent and unique physiology; others employ sleight of hand and collusion to effect illusions of varying complexity. The paintings are pervaded by a sense of visual discord; having worked as a scenic artist with the B.B.C.,they are informed by my experience in the use of the visual trickery of the film medium: glass-shots, cut-outs color seperation overlays and back projections. The first public showing of a selection from this ongoing series; “Smoke and Mirrors”, will be held at Theatr Mwldan Arts Centre: Cardigan; Wales, through September 2005. All Images © Glenn Ibbitson 2005 Na poziomie formalnym, prace stanowią syntezę koloru i kreski, za pomocą czego opisują objętość i konstrukcję. |
