Oskar Miarka
I was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1980. At the age of 12.5 I was moved to New York, U.S.A. where I am now completing four year studies in Film and Photography at Bard College. When i survive this last semester you'll probably hear more of and about me.
Why polaroids?
Polaroids have played an important role in my development as a photographer, especially in the years between 1996 and 2000 when i used a SX-70 Land camera almost exclusively over any other form of image capture. The result of these hundreds of instant pictures is a vision of what I see through the viewfinder as it translates into a two dimensional physical object.
Time-Zero film has made my subjects more willing to cooperate with my sometimes absurd requests, by seeing test prints they feel inclined to trust me, and like actors who like the script that they have read allow me to direct them. What i am presenting here represents three distinct attempts at a type of a theatrical portrait that uses dramatic light and focuses on facial expression. These portraits are a stock of characters for writers, personalities dramatically frozen, their eyes asking that you may adopt them, put them in your next story.
