Selfportrait

Grzegorz Kmin

  • Grzegorz Kmin born in 1972 in Lodz (Poland).
  • Artistic nickname – aspius.
  • Neurophysiologist by profession, artist by choice.

"I prefer ugliness, it's closer blood circulation" - Stanisław Grochowiak (polish poet)

Creation has always accompanied me. The theme of my artistic looming has evolved up to now and is still being transformed. In a secondary school two completely different and equally strong passions clarified: bilogy and drawing. For a while the latter won to mature into a desire to relate my further education to Academy of Art. I made one but unsuccessful despite good preparation attempt to get into Academy. I was too impatient to have another try.

Life showed that studying Biology at University was the right and absorbing move. The art felt betrayed and quickly took its revenge fighting a war querilla – scribes all over my notebooks and tables during my studies. On the third year it took the opportunity to attack. I started to work in computing. It was a temporary work as a DTP operator then a graphic designer in an advertising agency. A new era of computers and technocracy has begun and has started continously for nearly 10 years.

As I graduated I changed my dreams about doctorate to a career in advertising. I worked as a scanner operator, DTP operator, printer operator, photographer in studio, graphic designer and art director. 1998 was the crucial moment when the art launched a new offensive. I gave up vicious the nightmare. We have collaborated on many works over the years. We somehow reach an agreement and we have a good but emotionally unstable relationship whose fruits are over 200 graphics. There are not so many individual works, but added together with different versions makes that number. What I create I would describe as digital oils. It's a mixture of a photomanipulation, a little 3D (the outline of figures are rendered in Poser) and a kind of digital painting.

I work freelance from home (after many stormy adventures in agencies). I do my work from the idea to DTP. I designed visual idenity, annual reports, brochures, leaflets, catalogues, briefcases, illustrations, covers, christmas cards, easter cards, invitations, business cards, press advertisings, banners, www and many, many more. I work as my own personal graphic designer and have a free hand. It's comfortable. I am open to any forms cooperation including a permanent job at agency or a publishing house.

My favorite tools of creation and destruction are: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Poser. I work in a wavy way. When I am willing to work I do from a few to a lot of works one after another, then total paralisys, creative laziness and peace of mind – I can earn a commercially designs. Until a next time.

I am fascinated by art of Beksiński, Giger, Brom, Bisley, Saudek, Witkin, Macku. In their works I dip a mug called inspiration and drink it up with pleasure.

Winter Manifestation

I find it rather hard, when it comes to describing technique that I use. In my case, it varies. I started with photomontage, where I worked with elements of photographs: I would take an eye from here, a tree or its elements from there, etc. Currently all the figures I use in my work are rendered in Poser 5.0. Of course these are only the shapes, the whole postproduction is done in Photoshop. All the textures I do by myself or I use photographs, quite often other elements are also added.

While working on the cover for Jaroslaw Grzedowicz's book "Man of the Ice Garden" ("Pan Lodowego Ogrodu), the following steps were taken: "horse" is a render made in Poser, based on a stock model altered with filter liquify. Then textured and turned into a monster with the use of Photoshop. The naked figure of a rider is also a Poser render. Armour and chain mail were manually drawn in Illustrator, textured in Photoshop; "aged" look was also done in Photoshop.

Tree as well as grass were drawn in Illustrator and textured with Photoshop. Background construction of kind of a castle also done in Photoshop. A sky is a blend of a few photographs and moons are painted and treated with Photoshop. Of course, everything was mixed together and compounded with the use of Photoshop.

PSD files, in my case can even weigh at 2 GB. The biggest file, so far - "Winter Manifestation" ("Zimowa Manifestacja") weighed at 2,65 GB before flattening. There are hundreds of layers, grouped for facilitation into sets. Effects of layers, which I often use, are reaching up to it. It is a long and laborious process and I am rarely albe to finish work in one day. Usually I need 2-3 days or up to 2 weeks, with short sleep breaks, to create my graphics.

During the creative process much "waste" is coming into existence. It comes in various forms: it can be a hair, some structure or a texture. I am happy with them but I do not use them in my current work. They never go into waste - eventually I will use them in my upcoming projects. After the image is flattened, the final touches are done: I retouch the image, if needed; sometimes it also has to be smoothed, sharpened or I need to adjust the colors.

I work with the following software: Adobe Creative Suite, Poser 5.0 and set of filters KPT Collection. I owe two PC computers, that help me realize my visions: P4 3,2 Ghz, 4GB RAM, 2x250 GB + GB HDD and 1,8 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 2x80 GB HDD), digital cameras (Olympus c-5050 and Minolta s414), scanner and other tools, essential for the process of creating.

I am a professional graphic designer and freelancer illustrator. In this commercial part of my activity I mostly work with CS Illustrator.

I guess I belong to a small group of people living from what they like and I very much appreciate it. And this is what I wish you all.
