Why Polaroids?

I got interested in photography because of a permanent lack of time and pure lazinesss. My overwhelming desire for creativity was in conflict with a lack of interest in sitting for hours necessary for painting and other traditional forms of art. Photogrpaphy turned out to be the perfect choice.

I take photos with a digital SLR camera. I have an old medium-format and I also use polaroid, which for some time now has been my favourite. I mainly use model 636 or 600, which are the easiest to get hold of in Poland. I also have an SX-70 but in this country getting film for it is practically impossible. This is a great shame since it's a really nice machine. You could say that using a Polaroid camera in this age is an eccentricity or even an affection but it's not that simple.

I don't deny that I am an enthusiast of the latest gadgets, hard disks, memory cards etc. Digital gives me full control over the treatment of the image.

So why Polaroids?

Because they are imperfect and because there is no negative: it's unrepeatable and captures a unique colour, moment, someone's image. It feels like painting.

Because I've got no control over the fnished product I am freed from spending hours tweaking and fiddling. I could spend hours talking about this fantastic American invention but in summary there is some kind of magic in Polaroids even if it sounds like a cliche. You simply look for a subject, frame it, press the button and with the characterisitic Polaroid sound, out comes a wonderful picture. Beautiful, isn't it? What more could you want?
