Anthony Lister. Born, Lives and works in Brisbane, Australia.
Lister exhibits prolifically in Australia and overseas - in 2005 his work was the subject of five solo exhibitions including Wrapped Meat Lyric at Lyonsweir Gallery in New York. He travels regularly and has recently returned from a research residency in Berlin.
In 2002, he undertook a mentorship with New Zealand painter Max Gimblett in his New York studio. A selection of Lister's work was the focus of the monograph, Twice on Sundays, published by Fox Galleries in 2005.
Exploiting the trite nature of the everyday while exposing its place in the hairy underbelly of society, Lister's work often illustrates the marginal aspects of life we'd rather not linger on - people down on their luck, convicted criminals, the drudgery of the daily grind.
References to cartoons and comics filter through Lister's imagery to inject a quirky twist of humour and toy with our sense of certainty. In these loosely constructed narratives, Lister lifts the rusty lid on life to expose its fantastical grit.
Reflecting on the sponge-like impressionability one can feel while growing up in a media saturated environment, Lister's current work is an evocative study on the fluctuating stages of adolescence and society's influence on the transition into manhood. In Observations of Manliness, Lister looks from the inside out at a world laden with potentially corrupt and misleading role models.
