Lyzane Potvin

Lyzane Potvin Natural-born in 1977 (Quebec).

Has been living in Paris for the past 5 years

During the Paris vernissage titled I am a sow (exhibition from 29 October 2005 to 7 January 2006), it was possible to become acquainted with Lyzane Potvin's paintings, and in the particular with author herself, which spent 3 and a half of the hour in the cage for animals, dressed in a sexy, black underwear and the mask of a sow on the head.

Lyzane Potvin

Ordinary, wooden cage with metallurgical baring, inlaid with hay. In this closed space, seductive woman with the animal face.

Humane look imprisoned in a pig's mask.

Hypnotizing human look looming up through white dyed borders. It isn't possible to set yourself free from it, it is hard to stay in the same room with the author. The ones which counted to the conversation with Lyzane Potvin about her works are diverging worried. Her works are speaking for themselves and her dared performance instead of giving the answer, raises the question, whether the artist in today's world isn't an animal exposed to the prey of the potential buyers. Artist sliced into pieces as the porker.

Lyzanes' images were also viewed during the exhibition Girls, girls, girls... Rejected and forbidden in Paris, the exhibition found recipients in Swiss Neuchatel (attention: exhibition forbidden for minors). Panorama of works (paintings and films) of fifteen femlale artists contained brutal and desperate vision of sexuality. Artists used pornographic scenes in order to define the feminine sexuality in a new way. The first image of the exhibition, signed Lyzane Potvin, shows a woman masturbating herself in front of a pornographic magazine. In spite of the shock and the embarrassment, these representations are provoking everyone to rise questions about their own sexuality.

Potvin's art is very much accurately described by Frédéric Vignale:

Lyzane's painting touches what each of us is pushing into depths of oneself. Gangrene of fondnesses. At images females are cutting their hands and legs up for themselves, they are masturbating themselves, they are baring their vulva, their waters are breaking. In Lyzane's there is drinking, devouring, giving birth, sexual organs touching, all done in the most natural way.Life is one great menstruating. Woman is a victim, an object, the epicentre of misfortunes and dualities. The mother, the woman, the sister, beloved one, the lover, the daughter, the murderess, the whore, the alcoholic, the beauty, who's mouth is being gagged, who is being subjugated and marred. Lyzane Potvin images are filled with the redness, the colour which reffers to the birth and death. It is a symbol of a horrible pain of being born.

Lyzane Potvin's women are licking wounds of the humanity. Her works are rare and valuable evidence of a human pain.
