I started with black and white photography, developing all the pictures on my own. Recently I took to colour images. It requires more effort to get what you intended working with colour film but in return it allows you to capture the kind of tension that exists only in coloured hues.

Mikołaj Zając - Mikotaj
Born 1979.

Music Secondary School, the class of double-bass. Architecture on Technical University in Krakow.

Double-bass is kind of difficult to drag along so I switched to a camera and a couple of objects to invade space with.

I use them to create stories of humans and objects. Relationships that occur between them are like chemistry - bubbling and bursting in front of you eyes. What is exciting is that you never know what particular reaction will take place while you're mixing the ingredients together. But some kind of reaction is always there. Humans and objects match in a kind of symbiosis even though it often happens despite their will.

We don't exist without objects. The only thing that we have which is not an object is our body. Although this is a fluctuating, not always true, truth. In the relationship "object vs. non-object" I find a contrast between a function given to a body, object and an autonomous life that each object lives leaving a track, a line of traces behind.

I took up photography on university. Since then I have been searching for new areas, new forbidden romances of humans towards objects. It became possible thanks to patience and help of my friends who are alive, non-object parts of the photographs.

I started with black and white photography, developing all the pictures on my own. Recently I took to colour images. It requires more effort to get what you intended working with colour film but in return it allows you to capture the kind of tension that exists only in coloured hues. Although sometimes I find it hard to disagree with Ronald Barthes saying:

Colour is something fake to me, a lipstick (like one that is used to put make-up on corpses). This is because there is no life in pictures (that's a purely ideological concept), I want to be sure that a photographed body touches me with its own rays, not with some added light.
