Love of the invisible girl

Works from 1990 - 1999

In 1997 Zuzanna Janin made one of her invisible self-portrayals. Sweet girl (Zuzanna) is not so much an image as an after-image of the artist’s figure. Her figure is modeled from a copper wire net. Sometimes Janin covers the wire figure with a layer of cotton candy. Later, when the cotton candy dries off, it shows again the wire skeleton covered with a candy sediment. Then a figure of the Sweet girl is constructed again from the empty space circumscribed with copper wire. It’s a trace in space, which the artist would fill, if she would stood in place of her sculpture.

Fight : ILoveYouToo

The Sporting Life

In Zuzanna's work, a woman and a man, the artist and professional boxer, are pitted against each other in identical white costumes and red training gloves. Their identical uniforms seem to suggest that both are on the same team.

I've Seen My Death

Zuzanna Janin / Janina

In her contribution to the artistic treatment of death, Zuzanna Janin has adopted a distinct perspective: remaining personal and subjective she examines the subject in the context of contemporary sensibilities and culture. She is most interested in death as a social event, especially the way in which the deceased continues to exist in the memory of his or her loved ones. She examines the ceremonies and rituals related to the departed, showing images of death as they operate in the public imagination.

Death is analyzed as yet another topic appropriated by the media. Newspaper obituaries, video recordings, souvenir photos all make up the contemporary iconography of death which accordingly gains a new public and media dimension.

Absent for people, yet present

Taking risk is one of the main precepts of the world of art. Leonardo, Goya, Cezanne – they all took risks and shocked their contemporaries. But today we seem to have forgotten about it. Today many people apply the "safe risk" strategy. Or else they draw upon the achievements of other people and pretend to be oh so brave – take what others have done and put it into their own safe art.
