Selfportrait

Facundo Brown

I was born in Mendoza, Argentina in 1973. I studied architecture at Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, Universidad de Mendoza.

From 1997 to 2000 I worked for UNO newspaper directing weekly features on design and architecture. In addition, I have been a photography columnist for Los Andes newspaper and a regular contributor of articles and images to Primera Fila and Planeta Urbano magazines. For the last four years I have lived in California where I practice photography and design.

Artists such as Krzysztof Kieslowski, Werner Herzog, Alexander Sokurov and Abbas Kiarostami with his philosophy of "open incompleteness" have been a powerful source of inspiration. Other revered figures are Georges Rousse, Masao Yamamoto, Guillermo Kuitca and, of course, Walker Evans.

Why Polaroids?

I began making photographs in 1988. In recent times, I have been using a 1970's SX-70 Polaroid camera and Time-Zero film. I chose this medium precisely because of its limitations and in part as a reaction to the ever-more-perfect world of digital photography, which dangerously forgives the dull eye and promotes indiscriminate "trigger happiness" by tempting us to aim the camera at anything, anytime, anywhere.

I am interested in chance and uniqueness as critical factors in the artistic process. For me, all the limitations of a Polaroid camera along with the instability of the Time-Zero film within its "self-contained darkroom" are welcomed creative opportunities that will affect the final result. Only then each print can be unrepeatable and treasured as the ultimate photographic object.
